Error Message while Shutting Down Empty Error Message while Shutting Down

The message we discussed goes away too fast to copy it all. What I got so far was "The exception unknown software exception(Oxc0000005) occurred in the application". It comes on for a couple of seconds when I shut down. The machines then shuts down as normal. If you need the entire message, let me know.

Error Message while Shutting Down Empty Re: Error Message while Shutting Down

This type of error is a generic one that is displayed usually when a program fails to shut down or hangs up during the windows shut down process. Whenever you tell the computer the shut down or restart or log off, a race starts between the windows shutdown process and the shut down process of any of the other 30 to 60+ programs that may be running in your computer (most of them running in the background). as windows shuts down it gives some sort of a time limit for all other programs to shut down before windows does - and if those programs take too long or stall - windows just leaves them in the dust and proceeds with the shut down anyway, and that's when you get error messages like this or more commonly the "program not responding" message with the promp to "end now" (BTW click on the End Now button to force it to close in that situation). most of the time this error is more of an irritation than anything that would damage your system.

One way to troubleshoot is to use a program like "startup control panel" panel and disable all programs that run during windows bootup and stay running in the background. You then reboot, get back the desktop screen, then do a shut down (or restart) operation and watch and see if the error continues. if NOT, then you open up the startup control panel and re-enable half of all the programs that were disabled before, then reboot and repeat the process. the idea is doing a process of elimination. you will eventually find the entry (and therefor the program) that does not "behave" during shut down. at that point you can do some research about that program online (via Google) and determine if this a program you really need starting up in the first place.

you can download Startup Control Panel here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Once you download the tiny file, just double click and install the utility. An icon called STARTUP will then show up in your CONTROL PANEL window, provided that you have the control panel on the "CLASSIC" view and not category view.

Open up the STARTUP program and you will see several tabs. Stretch the window wide enough so that all tabs can display on a single row. Click through each of the first 5 tabs and uncheck all items you see in them. this is how you disable a startup program (adding a checkmark re-enables them). then "X" out of the program and reboot - and continue troubleshooting.

    Things to keep in mind:

    0) be sure the control panel is in classic view and not category view

    1) Windows Vista users - you MUST disable that pesky "user account control" (and reboot your system) or else you cannot install startup control panel after you download. the UAC is accessed from Control Panel and user accounts icon.

    2) Windows Vista 64-bit users - the icon labeled STARTUP will not immediately show up in your control panel window. Instead look for the icon "View 32-bit Control Panel Items" and STARTUP will be there.
